The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has commended the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), for its twenty five billion naira foundation laying of Ecumenical Airport Chapel.
Speaking at the event on Saturday in Abuja, he said the Ground-Breaking Ceremony of the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is deeply symbolic. “It represents the confluence of faith and progress, of spirituality and national development and of divine reflection amidst the movement and momentum of modern life.
“Today, we gather to lay the foundation – not just of a physical structure – but of a sanctuary of hope, a refuge of peace and a sacred space where weary travellers, devout pilgrims as well as members of the Christian faithful can pause, reflect, pray and reconnect with God in the midst of their journeys.”
He said the vision of an Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre is both timely and inspired.
“In an era marked by the pressures and uncertainties of travel, the need for spiritual anchorage has never been more compelling. This Centre will serve as a consecrated haven – open to all – where hearts may be lifted, burdens eased and faith renewed.
“Beyond its spiritual essence, this project is a testament to the enduring role of faith in shaping our national consciousness. It underscores the importance of moral values, compassion, unity and the shared humanity that binds us together as a people. Indeed, it stands as a beacon of light and a symbol of hope, not only for the Christian community but for the nation as a whole.
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, this initiative also aligns seamlessly with the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing passenger experience and upgrading critical infrastructure across our aviation sector. The transformation of our airports into spaces that cater not only to physical transit but also to emotional and spiritual well-being reflects a holistic approach to national development – one that recognizes the dignity and totality of the human person.
“ The estimated investment of Twenty-Five Billion Naira (₦25,000,000,000) in this mega project speaks volumes about the scale of ambition, the depth of vision and the collective resolve of all stakeholders involved. It is a bold declaration that Nigeria is not only building structures but nurturing souls; not only facilitating journeys but enriching lives.”
