Akwa Ibom athletes praise Gov. Eno after continental weightlifting triumph

Nigeria’s dominance on the continental weightlifting stage received another major boost as Akwa Ibom athletes returned from the African Weightlifting Championships in Egypt with an impressive haul of medals and qualification tickets for the Commonwealth Games.
The triumphant athletes, who represented Nigeria at the championships, paid glowing tributes to the administration of Umo Eno, describing the state’s renewed investment in sports as a driving force behind their success.
Leading the charge was Ruth Nyong, who produced a dominant performance in the women’s 45kg category to clinch three gold medals, while Edidiong Umuofia secured one gold and two silver medals in the 71kg category to cap a memorable outing for Team Nigeria.
The medal-winning athletes, alongside officials of the state Weightlifting Association, were received by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, who hailed the duo for bringing pride to both the state and the nation on the international stage.
Bassey reaffirmed the commitment of the Akwa Ibom State Government to sports development under the ARISE Agenda, emphasizing youth empowerment and talent discovery as key priorities.
“The creation of a stand-alone sports ministry was the greatest thing to happen to sports in the state, and the harvest has been huge,” the Commissioner stated while commending the athletes for their discipline, dedication, and professionalism.
Vice President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Lawrence Iquaibom, who was part of the delegation, expressed profound appreciation to Governor Umo Eno, the Ministry of Sports, and the Commissioner for their unwavering support toward the growth of weightlifting in Akwa Ibom State.
According to Iquaibom, the achievements recorded in Egypt were a direct reflection of the government’s continuous investment in sports infrastructure, athlete welfare, and grassroots development.
A visibly delighted Bassey also praised the Akwa Ibom Weightlifting Association for its growing impact, noting that the state government remains committed to rewarding athletes who distinguish themselves in national and international competitions.
He referenced the recently concluded maiden State Sports Festival, where medal-winning athletes received financial rewards, as part of efforts to motivate young talents across the state.
The Commissioner further urged youths with passion for sports to remain committed to developing their talents, assuring them of government support and opportunities for growth.
Highlight of the reception was the presentation of medals to the Sports Commissioner by the victorious athletes.
Among dignitaries present at the reception were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Weightlifting Association, Mr. Isaac Ikono, coaches, and other officials of the association.
