In a move to help alleviate the plight of the widows and orphans of the security operatives, who were brutally murdered in Alakyo, Nasarawa state, the Police Officers Wives Association(POWA), has empowered them with over 70 grinding machines and other items worth more than N3 million.
President of POWA and wife of the Inspector General of Police, Mrs. Zahra Bunu- Abubakar, yesterday presented the items to the widows and orphans in Lafia.
The POWA president, represented by Mrs. Zubaida Atiku-Kafur, wife of the AIG Training, said the gesture was part of the organization’s endowment assistance Programme, stressing that the association was committed to the improvement of the livelihood of families of police officers.
Mrs. Abubakar also said that items provided in collaboration with the state chapter of the association would go a long way, to ameliorate the plight of the widows and orphans of slain officers in the state.
She charged the widows to put the items to good use adding that POWA would continually reach out to them especially with regards to the education of their children.
In a remark, Nasarawa state First Lady, Hajiya Salamatu Al-makura, who also made a cash donation of N1 million to support the widows, commended POWA for the initiative saying; it would boost the morale of the widows and orphans.
“This gesture goes a long way in encouraging the affected to move on and face the challenges of life believing their loved ones did not die in vain.
“POWA has shown us that mothers would always lookout for the well-being of the family; take responsibility of ensuring peace and the moral upbringing of the children”, she said.
She therefore tasked the widows and women generally to keep close watch on their children especially as the 2015 general election approaches so that politicians would not use them to ferment trouble, harping on the need to promote peace and unity in the country irrespective of religious and ethnic differences.
Other items donated to the widows included bags of rice, toiletries, bales of wrapper as well as school bags and writing materials for the orphans.
