From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

Hundreds of Benue Civil servants on Wednesday were locked out as Governor Hyacinth Alia paid an unscheduled visit to the State secretariat.

Our correspondent reports that the Governor arrived at the secretariat at about 10:35 am and the gates were immediately locked, manned by gun wielding security officers as he inspected ongoing renovation work in the complex including installation of lights.

Governor Alia who carried out routine unscheduled visits to the secretariat, went round most of the ministries and discovered to his chagrin that some of the Commissioners and other principal officers particulrly the Head of Service Agbogbo Ode were absent.

The HOS absence even stalled a scheduled meeting between the Governor and directors.

While addressing the workers, Governor Alia  said, “with what you are doing, you are creating a vicious circle for your families. You cannot get money and be uplifted because you are cheats and because of the effect of what you are  doing.

“The work I do is not for me, but for those who don’t know that am the governor and those who will see me and not recognize me. I am appealing to you because I have a quick way of getting your names and firing you as I have the power to do so. I am speaking to you as a priest and not as Governor and telling you the dangers in what you are doing. “
