Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) will henceforth solely handle the responsibility of providing waste management services as well as collection of waste service charge in Federal Capital City (FCC), according to the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abdullahi Adamu Candido.
Candido said the decision for AMAC to withdraw from waste management activities within the FCC was in the best interest of both parties and most especially that of residents.
According to him, the decision to concede the responsibility came as a result of series of meetings, aimed at resolving the lingering dispute which have lasted for over three years.
While addressing a joint press conference in Abuja, the AMAC Chairman disclosed that during the period of the crisis, millions of Naira have been lost on both sides, he urged the residents in the FCC to take note and act accordingly.
He said, “All cleaning services as well as collection of waste service charges within the FCT will now be the sole responsibility of AEPB.
“Henceforth, all payments for waste management services in the federal capital city are to be made solely to AEPB.
“Subsequently, all pending litigations between AEPB and AMAC and service users regarding issues on waste management within federal capital city are hereby withdrawn.”
In his response, the Director of AEPB, Baba Shehu Lawan, said the Board is fully committed to using it’s long standing experience in waste management to bring its expertise to bear.
Lawan noted that the agreement has brought an end to all the crisis regarding waste management and collection of waste service charge.
He therefore pledged to partner with AMAC in every way possible to ensure that such crisis doesn’t arise in future.
