The Benue Association of Former Elected Local Government Council Chairmen has condemned what it described as a “shameful collapse of political identity and discipline” in the state, following the controversial appearance of some APC governorship aspirants at a PDP caucus meeting.
The association, in a statement issued in Makurdi and signed by its leader, Stephen Manta, criticized the presence of the aspirants at the PDP expanded caucus held at the residence of former governor Samuel Ortom.
Addressing journalists at the NUJ House, Makurdi, Manta an erstwhile chairman of Vandeikya LGA described the development as disturbing, shameful, and politically scandalous.
According to the group, the action amounts to a betrayal of party loyalty and raises serious concerns about the credibility of those seeking leadership under the APC.
“Political parties are not social clubs. They are institutions built on ideology, loyalty, and collective purpose. For individuals aspiring under the APC to openly fraternize with the PDP, the very opposition they claim to challenge, is a blatant act of political duplicity,” the statement read.
The association questioned the true allegiance of the aspirants, suggesting their actions reflect opportunistic politics and a lack of ideological conviction.
“It exposes a dangerous trend politicians without principles, moving from one camp to another in search of personal gain. Today they sit in PDP caucuses; tomorrow they will claim APC tickets. This is the height of ideological bankruptcy,” the group added.
The chairmen further alleged that such appearances point to possible backdoor negotiations, hidden alliances, and political horse-trading capable of undermining the democratic process.
They stressed that the conduct is not only an insult to loyal party members but also a threat to political stability in the state.
“Thousands of APC faithful have worked tirelessly to build the party. For aspirants to undermine that structure by aligning with opposition forces is unacceptable,” they said.
The association maintained that anyone unable to demonstrate party loyalty has no moral right to seek leadership under its platform, insisting that leadership requires clarity, conviction, and consistency.
Reaffirming their stance, the group pledged continued support for the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, vowing to mobilize grassroots backing for his development agenda.
They also urged political parties to enforce discipline and accountability, while calling on the public to reject what they described as politically motivated actions capable of destabilizing governance in Benue State.
“Benue deserves better than propaganda and political duplicity,” the association declared.
