A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Paul Ikonne, has declared his intention to unseat the senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe, in the 2027 general elections.
Ikonne, who recently obtained his nomination and expression of interest forms, made the remarks while addressing journalists on Wednesday, describing his ambition as a response to what he termed years of ineffective representation in the district.
The former Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) criticised Abaribe’s performance, alleging that the lawmaker has lost connection with the grassroots.
According to him, Abia South has not benefited adequately from its representation at the National Assembly, insisting that the district requires a new direction.
“If you are familiar with Senator Abaribe, you will realise that he is more of a media figure. Our people are saying enough is enough; it is time for a change,” Ikonne stated.
He maintained that his entry into the race is aimed at delivering more effective and people-oriented representation.
The comments set the stage for what observers anticipate will be a keenly contested senatorial race in Abia South as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of 2027.
