Association faults govt on closure of FUDMA study centres

By Abubakar Yunusa

The Daura Literacy and Awareness Association (DLAA ) has cautioned against the closure of study centres operated by the Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina State, saying it would deny thousands of students access to higher education.

The association also disagreed with the plan to force students from the various study centres to relocate to the university’s main campus in Dutsin-Ma, arguing that it would place their lives at risk because of the security challenges in the area.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Abdullahi Aliyu, the DLAA appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and the management of FUDMA to urgently halt the planned relocation.

According to the association, thousands of students currently enrolled in the centres may be forced to abandon their studies due to financial constraints, family responsibilities and security concerns if compelled to move to Dutsin-Ma.

The group noted that many of the affected students come from low-income families already struggling with the country’s economic hardship, as such the additional burden of accommodation, transportation, feeding and other living expenses could place university education beyond their reach.

The DLAA said the situation could be more challenging for female students and married women who combine academic pursuits with family obligations within their communities.

The association stated that cultural expectations, childcare responsibilities and safety concerns could make relocation impracticable for many women, effectively ending their educational aspirations.

It further expressed concern over male students who rely on farming, small-scale businesses and other occupations to support themselves and their families while pursuing their studies.

According to the group, forcing such students to relocate could leave them with the difficult choice of sacrificing either their education or their means of livelihood.

The association also highlighted the impact the closure could have on primary school teachers who depend on the study centres to improve their qualifications while remaining in their communities.

It warned that disrupting access to continuing education for teachers could negatively affect professional development and learning outcomes in schools.

The DLAA stressed that the planned relocation comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of the state, and cautioned that compelling students to travel regularly or relocate to areas affected by security threats could expose them to additional risks.

The association further warned that denying young people access to education and opportunities could create conditions capable of fuelling social instability and worsen insecurity.

It maintained that community-based study centres have significantly expanded access to tertiary education for women, rural dwellers, workers and other disadvantaged groups.

The group urged authorities to allow currently enrolled students to complete their programmes at their respective centres and adopt a transitional arrangement that would keep the facilities operational until all admitted students graduate.

DLAA also noted that the issue could have political implications ahead of the 2027 general elections, given the large number of students and families likely to be affected.

The association expressed confidence that dialogue among stakeholders would produce a solution that protects students’ interests without compromising educational standards.

It added that education remains one of the most effective tools for economic empowerment, peacebuilding and community development, urging authorities not to sacrifice the future of thousands of young Nigerians.
