AUMTCO takes delivery of 70 new buses – Official

The Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company (AUMTCO) has taken delivery of 70 new High Capacity buses promised by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), to shore up its operations.

Managing Director of the company, Mr. Abdulrazak Oniyangi, the vehicles that were part of the 100 buses ordered by the FCT Administration from China, would be on display today (Friday), at the Eagle Square.

It would recalled that over 40 vehicles comprising of 16 high capacity buses (4) and 24 other cars and mini-buses, in first car bomb explosion, that rocked the Nyanya motor park, in the suburb area of the FCT, on April 14.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Oniyangi, further disclosed that the remaining 30 are yet to be cleared at the Lagos State Sea Port, saying that they will be inaugurated next week.

The FCT Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed, had earlier promised that the 100 buses were expected in the territory between April and May.

Mohammed said the additional buses would help to expand the fleet of AUMTCO in the city and also improve service delivery.

He also promised that some of the buses would be deployed to the Nyanya-Abuja route, to address the inadequacy of vehicles being experienced by commuters.

However, following the attach on the park, the FCT minister, after visiting the scene of the blast, said the FCTA would look at the ways to install special mechanisms to detect metal or explosive devices on its high capacity buses, in order to preserve human lives.

According to him, “the FCT Administration would meet with security agencies to exploit ways of providing additional security for motor parks, markets and other public places in the FCT.”
