Bayelsa United’s disappointing season took another turn for the worse after suffering a shocking 3-1 defeat to already relegated Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in the Round of 32 of the President Federation Cup.
The loss means the Prosperity Boys have now crashed out of all competitions this season, compounding the disappointment of their recent relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Despite going into the encounter as favorites, Bayelsa United were outplayed by Wikki Tourists, who produced a spirited performance to secure their place in the next round of the competition.
With the defeat, pressure is mounting on the club’s management and technical crew as the consequences of a poor campaign continue to unfold. Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, had earlier warned that the club’s management could be disbanded if the team suffered relegation from the top flight.
Now, with the club’s Federation Cup journey also coming to an abrupt end, the governor’s threat appears closer to becoming reality. Football stakeholders and supporters across the state are eagerly awaiting the government’s next move as Bayelsa United faces one of the most challenging periods in its history.
The coming days could prove decisive for the future of the club’s leadership as the Prosperity Boys begin preparations for life outside the top division.
