Benue women protest Chibok abduction

An organization known as the ‘Concerned Benue Women’, yesterday embarked on a peaceful demonstration to protest the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls of Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno state, urging the Federal Government to ensure an immediate end to insurgency in the country.

The women, who numbered over 200 carried placards, some of which read: ‘Bring back our girls’; ‘Secure our border’; ‘Benue Women want an end to insurgency’, gathered at Nyiman layout, a suburb in Makurdi, the state capital. They offered fervent prayers, asking God to intervene and cause the release of the abducted girls by the insurgents.

The group also prayed for general insecurity, leadership tussle, the frequent attacks by suspected herdsmen and the epileptic power supply in the entire nation.

Speaking to newsmen, coordinator of the group, Mrs. Dorcas Ukpe said they were seriously saddened by the criminal act being perpetrated by members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, stating that their peaceful protest was aimed at seeking divine intervention into the issue.

Ukpe, who is Benue state Director-General of National Planning Commission, expressed confidence that international intervention that will lead to the rescue of the abducted girls, while urging the federal government to intensify adequate security at the borders.
