Common errors in English With Samuel Alimi

Last week, an active follower was motivated to ask about the difference between ‘junction’ and ‘juncture’ as he expressed his confusion about the two words. The truth is, many English users struggle with these words, as they have probably been misled into thinking they can be used interchangeably. The confusion is often due to the fact that they encountered the wrongly used words in poorly edited books.
It is crucial to study how language can be used through media organizations such as the Peoples Daily Newspaper and other reputable sources. Additionally, consulting authoritative dictionaries for correct spellings, pronunciation and meanings, as well as the classification of parts of speech, can help clarify any confusion.
In my response to his inquiries, I emphatically stated that these words have different meanings. Therefore, it is ungrammatical to mix them up in your writing, as this could lead to misinterpretation and portray you as a poor writer. I conducted a search through the Cambridge Dictionary to thoroughly explain the distinctions between these words. Please review the following entries:

JUNCTION: A junction is a place where things, especially roads or railways, come together. Below are example sentences using the word:
You should slow down as you approach the junction.
There is a service station at the next motorway junction (a point from which you can leave the motorway).
The shopping center is near the junction of the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

JUNCTURE: A juncture refers to a particular point in time. Example sentences using the word:
At this juncture, it is impossible to say whether she will make a full recovery.
Negotiations are at a critical juncture.

Other example sentences in the Cambridge English Corpus:
At this critical juncture, the government was still reluctant to get involved but private initiative stepped in and took the lead.

Even so, these do reflects the popular mood at each of the junctures in time.

Choices made in the context of this regularly uncertainty loom large as an important juncture in the subsequent evolution of biotechnology policy.

Even at every juncture there is a seamless connection between private moments and public events, intimate feelings and collective sentiments, personal goals and national ambitions.

Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary: We are at a crucial juncture in our relationship.

Should it be “By 7:00 am” or “At 7:00 am”?
The meeting among the directors began promptly at 10 am.
The man is expected to arrive by 10 am.
Understanding the distinction will prevent misunderstandings when communicating with others. When using “by,” it indicates that the action will be completed before or no later than the specified time.
For example, I will come to school by 7 am. “By 7 am” is not specific, meaning I will be there anytime before 7 am but not after.
On the other hands, “At 7 am” means you will arrive precisely at that time. It is specific.

Writing an Examination?
It is important to also discuss the differences between “write an examination” and “sit for an examination”. Did you know that you are not supposed to write an examination as a student? You should not use the verb “write” when referring to taking an examination.
She wrote her first-semester examination last week. (Incorrect)
She took her first-semester examination last week. (Correct)
She sat her first-semester examination last week. (Correct)
The verb ‘write’ should only be used by teachers or lecturers when setting examination questions. Therefore, it is correct to say “take an examination” or “sit for an examination”.
