The police have arraigned a businessman, Umar Ado,50, in a Senior Magistrates’ court in Mararaba, for alleged breach of trust and cheating.
The accused, who resides at Mararaba, is facing a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Samuel Okoro, told the court that Umaru Benson of Block 173 Area D Nyanya, FCT, reported the matter at Sani Abache Road Police Station on March 16.
Okoro said that sometime in 2009, the accused collected N350, 000 from the complainant to start selling tomatoes and other perishable food items.
The prosecutor said that instead of paying back the money after the business had become successful, the accused converted the capital and the interest to his personal use.
He said the accused later absconded to unknown destination.
He said the offence contravened and is punishable under sections 312 and 322 of the Penal code, respectively, which stipulates three years’ imprisonment or a fine or both.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr. Jeremiah Danladi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
He said that the surety must have a means of livelihood and must be a civil servant on grade level 10 or above.
Danladi adjourned the case untill April 7 for proper hearing. (NAN)
