Boko Haram sabotages electricity supply in NE Nigeria

Power lines were blown down during a recent attack by terror group Boko Haram in Nigeria’s northeastern city of Maiduguri, causing days of unending darkness for local residents, an official statement said on Tuesday.
The incident last Friday had caused the city of Maiduguri, capital of the northern state of Borno, and stronghold of Boko Haram, to be cut off from the national electricity grid, said the statement by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The TCN, which is in charge of electricity transmission in the country, said some Boko Haram militants damaged the facility in Maiduguri during the attack. This also affected the power supply in Damaturu, a neighboring city in the northeast region.
“The incident affected a 330kV transmission line between Maiduguri and Damaturu. Also, the Damboa-Maiduguri 132kV transmission line has equally been disconnected from the grid for some time, for the same reason,” said the statement by TCN’s spokeswoman, Ndidi Mbah.
Mbah said technicians were working to repair the electricity line, adding that the fault on the Maiduguri-Damaturu line had so far been located. In June 2019, the local electricity transmission firm had blamed Boko Haram for deliberately damaging a power facility in Molai, a town in Maiduguri, during an attack in the area.
