Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the payment of N529,699,500 to cover the 2025 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees for 26,158 final-year students in public schools across the state’s 27 local government areas.
The payment was formally presented during a ceremony on Friday at the Quality Assurance Office in Maiduguri, overseen by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe.
The commissioner emphasized that the initiative underscores Governor Zulum’s dedication to removing financial barriers for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Also, the state government subsidizes 75% of WASSCE fees for eligible public school candidates, ensuring broader access to education.
“This sustained investment reflects the governor’s vision of an inclusive education system where no child is left behind,” Wakilbe stated.
He noted a key achievement, public school students now receive their results simultaneously with private school candidates, promoting fairness.
With this latest disbursement, the state has spent N3.52 billion on external exams since 2019, benefiting 165,442 students.
Furthermore, the Commissioner commended the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for extending exam centers to previously underserved areas like Askira Uba and Ngala, eliminating the need for students to travel to Maiduguri.
“This expansion eases logistical burdens, enhances safety, and ensures no student is disadvantaged by location”, he added.
Wakilbe also thanked local government chairmen and education officials for their support.
Also, the WAEC’s Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator for Maiduguri, Dr. Leonard Mado Odoh confirmed receipt of the payment and praised Governor Zulum’s consistency.
“This is a historic milestone. Governor Zulum and the Borno State Government have once again demonstrated their commitment to education. We deeply appreciate this partnership”, Odoh stated.
