The Good Governance Assembly(GGA) has praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, over what it described as 10 major pensioners’ welfare actions, including the disbursement of more than ₦21 billion in pension arrears, gratuities and death benefits, plans to further increase pensions, and the provision of logistical and institutional support to the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP).
The group, led by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jibril Isa Samaru made its position known at a press conference in Zaria on Monday evening, where it highlighted key measures taken by the governor’s administration to improve the welfare and dignity of retirees.
According to the group, the first in the list of the governor’s welfare actions was the disbursement of more than ₦21 billion towards pension arrears, gratuities and death benefits since the administration assumed office.
The group named the sustained payment of monthly pensions itself as the second welfare action and the announcement of plans to further increase pensions as the third, noting that the measures were aimed at providing greater financial support for retirees.
They noted that the fourth welfare effort of the governor was the recognition of pensioners’ contributions to Kaduna State through his commitment to improving their wellbeing and ensuring that their years of public service were not forgotten.
The group identified the fifth welfare action as the conferment of the Pensioner-Friendly Governor award on Uba Sani by the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in recognition of his administration’s commitment to pensioners’ welfare.
According to the Assembly, the sixth action was the presentation of an official operational bus to the NUP to strengthen the Union’s operations and support its engagements with pensioners across the state.
The group listed the seventh welfare intervention as the allocation of a parcel of land for the construction of the Union’s permanent state secretariat in Kaduna, describing the provision as an institutional support measure for the organisation.
They identified the eighth action as the administration’s commitment to honouring the sacrifices of retirees through compassion, responsibility and concrete interventions rather than mere promises.
The ninth welfare action, according to the group, was the governor’s reaffirmation of his commitment to improved welfare and inclusive development, with pensioners forming part of the population whose needs the government pledged to address.
The group named the tenth action as the administration’s broader commitment to sustaining pension-related payments and pursuing further improvements in retirees’ welfare, including the proposed pension increase.
The Assembly also noted that the NUP had endorsed Uba Sani for another term in office and declared its readiness to mobilise its members across Kaduna State in support of his re-election bid in 2027.
The group said the interventions highlighted the importance of recognising pensioners’ years of service and providing them with the financial and institutional support required to live with dignity.
