Breaking: Super Eagles edge Lesotho, revive World Cup hopes

Date:

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the next FIFA World Cup received a significant lift on Friday as the Super Eagles battled to a 2–1 away victory over Lesotho in a tense qualifier at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Contrary to expectations of an easy outing, the encounter turned into a test of grit and patience. The hosts proved stubborn opponents, forcing Nigeria to dig deep for the vital three points.

The opening half was tight and tactical, with neither side managing to find a breakthrough. Nigeria dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances, while Lesotho defended compactly and threatened intermittently on the counterattack.

The breakthrough came after the restart when captain William Troost-Ekong confidently converted a penalty to put Nigeria ahead. Substitute Akor Adams later extended the lead with a composed finish, seemingly putting the game beyond doubt.

Lesotho, however, refused to roll over and pulled one back late on, ensuring a tense finale. Despite the late pressure, the Super Eagles held firm to secure a crucial win that keeps their qualification hopes firmly alive.
