BREAKING: Tinubu orders suspension of cashless tax collections at airports

By Egena Sunday Ode

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate suspension of the cashless tax collection policy by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the nation’s airports across the country.

The order was given by the president on Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in order to eliminate the current gridlock at the airports as a result of the implementation of the policy.

Recall that the policy designed to enhance efficient tax collections at the airports and ostensibly make more revenues available to government came into effect last week, and has since been trailed by tales of woes by air passengers over the gridlock that had caused many to miss their flights.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo who announced the policy suspension while briefing newsmen at the end of FEC meeting said Tinubu was unhappy with the development and had taken the measure to ease the suffering being encountered by passengers as a result of the new tax policy.

He added, however, that the President’s empathy did not mean that he was against the policy, but the gridlock it had created.

Accordingly, Keyamo said the President had equally directed him to return to the drawing board and come out with a better approach of revenue collection that would not cause much inconveniences to air passengers.

He said in the new approach, the private sector would play a vital role to help in the collection of FAAN cahrges in all the airports.
