Kaduna State has taken a bold leap toward agricultural transformation as Governor Uba Sani rolled out a major livestock intervention programme designed to strengthen food security, raise farmer incomes, and modernise agricultural production across the state.
At a colourful ceremony held at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Hall in Kaduna, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, who represented the governor, officially flagged off the distribution of critical assets to farmers under the initiative—an ambitious programme expected to significantly boost livestock and poultry production across the state.
The intervention targets 5,000 farmers across all 23 Local Government Areas, organised into cooperatives of 10 members each, reflecting the administration’s deliberate strategy of empowering grassroots producers while strengthening cooperative farming models.
In a move that underscores the government’s embrace of innovation, beneficiaries are receiving solar-powered freezers and feed milling machines, tools designed to reduce post-harvest losses, preserve livestock products, and improve value-chain efficiency. The initiative builds on the earlier distribution of day-old chicks and poultry feeds, which had already reached participating farmers.
Officials say the objective is clear and strategic: increase productivity, enhance food security, and drive rural economic growth while positioning agriculture as a central pillar of Kaduna State’s development agenda.
Beyond the immediate intervention, the Uba Sani administration is pursuing a broader livestock sector transformation through the rehabilitation of abattoirs and slaughter slabs, establishment of milk collection centres, construction of solar-powered boreholes in pastoral communities, and strengthening of animal health services and vaccination campaigns.
Analysts say the programme reflects a new policy direction in which technology, cooperative enterprise, and targeted government support converge to unlock the economic potential of agriculture.
With the rollout of solar-powered infrastructure and statewide farmer support, the Kaduna government is signaling that agriculture is no longer treated as a subsistence activity—but as a strategic engine for jobs, food security, and sustainable economic growth.
