Breaking: Uba Sani Frees Convicts to Mark Nigeria @64

Date:

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has released 40 convicts from the state’s correctional center to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, marking the fifth time he has exercised his prerogative of mercy since assuming office.

The compassionate gesture follows similar acts on Democracy Day celebrations in 2023 and 2024, January 1st, 2024, and last year’s Independence Day, bringing the total number of freed convicts to over 200.

Stakeholders in Kaduna have said that with this move, Governor Sani has reaffirmed his seriousness in giving second chances and promoting rehabilitation within the justice system.

Governor Sani’s decision is seen as a significant step towards decongesting the correctional facilities and providing opportunities for reintegration into society. The freed convicts are expected to reintegrate into their communities, leveraging the chance to rebuild their lives.

The State’s Attorney and Commissioner of Justice, Sule Shuaibu (SAN) described the governor’s gesture as “another demonstration of his compassionate leadership and dedication to the welfare of Kaduna State residents.

“This act of mercy demonstrates Governor Sani’s belief in redemption and rehabilitation,” said the Commissioner.

An associate of the governor, Aminu Zaria, in his reaction to the development, said the action was “a beacon of hope for those seeking a fresh start.”

Human rights groups and legal experts have praised the move, citing the need for restorative justice and rehabilitation in the Nigerian prison system.

“Governor Sani’s actions align with international best practices in criminal justice reform,” noted youth activist, Comrade Habeeb Bello Chikaji.

Some observers are also hopeful that Kaduna State Government may go a notch further with plans to provide vocational training and economic empowerment programmes for the released convicts, ensuring a seamless transition back into society.

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, Governor Sani’s gesture serves as a reminder of the country’s commitment to justice, compassion, and human rights.
