Budget Defence: Senate supports increased allocation for Sports Institute

The Senate has expressed its support for increased budgetary allocation for the National Institute for Sports (NIS) from N2.8 billion to approximately N60 billion in 2026 to enhance sports development in the country.
Presenting the 2026 budget proposal, Director General of NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu said objectives of the Institute is to support improved training, infrastructure and preparations for international events.
Comrade Shaibu who solicited the support of the legislature in achieving his mandate for the Institute said he is planning to train grassroots coach on the basic knowledge and techniques of modern Sports.


The Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) assured the DG of the Senate’s support for the increased budgetary allocation to NIS.
Speaking during the budget defence of the Institute on Thursday at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, Senator Ningi also promised to move a motion in the Senate for the resuscitation of Board of the National Institute of Sports, NIS.
