Buhari tasks Ulama’a on true teaching of Islam

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Islamic scholars and parents to inculcate in their children the true teachings of Islam, which centres around peace and piety.
He said this will guard them against extremist views which have given rise to insurgency and violence.
The President was speaking at the closing of ceremony of this year’s National Quranic Recitation Competition held in Katsina.
Represented by the Minister of State for Aviation, Alhaji Hadi Sirika, the President noted that doctrines being preached by extremist groups do not represent the Islamic faith.
The President urged Islamic preachers and Imams to always preach the right set of Islamic values in children.
In his speech, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar the third, urged the federal and northern state governments to redouble efforts at stamping out insurgency particularly in the north-east.
The Sultan also urged leaders at all levels to fear Allah and discharge their duties according to the oath of office they have sworn.
Aminu Yunus from Bauchi State and Amina Aliyu from Borno State emerged overall best in male and female categories of the Qur’anic recitation competition.
Winners in the competition will represent Nigeria at the global Quranic Recitation Competition to hold in Saudi Arabia later in the year.
Army disburses N19m to 95 widows of fallen heroes The Nigerian Army has disbursed N19 million to 95 widows of fallen heroes residing in Abakpa and Awkunanaw Barracks in Enugu State to ameliorate the hardship being faced by the women.
The money was donated by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu state. Adamu Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, said this in a statement issued by Sagir Musa, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations of the Division on Saturday in Enugu.
Mr. Musa, a colonel, who explained that each of the widows received N200, 000, said that the money was presented to the widows at the division’s auditorium in Enugu on Friday.
He said that Mr. Abubakar, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, urged the beneficiaries to make use of the money judiciously.
Mr. Musa also said that the GOC thanked Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his continued support to the widows and the Division.
Mr. Ugwuanyi had during the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration pledged to empower the widows of fallen heroes of the Division.
The governor on Feb. 17, during the 2018 West African Social Activities (WASA) held in Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu, redeemed the pledge with a cheque of N19.6 million, which he presented to the GOC.
Mr. Musa also said that the Garrison Commander of the Division, Brig.-Gen. Lasisi Adegboye, and representatives from the Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), 82 Division Chapter attended the occasion.
