The Coalition Against Corruption Leaders (CACOL) has lambasted the Lagos state government over its claim that some enemies of the government fuelled the protests by the Lagos State University students against the increment of the institution’s tuition fees.
LASU students had on Tuesday clashed with the police during a protest march to the Oshodi Market to educate the traders on why the fees should be reduced.
But the Lagos government had claimed that the problems in the Lagos State University were being stimulated by people who were bent on derailing the government’s plans to reposition the school.
Reacting on behalf of the Coalition, its Executive Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran described the claim by the Lagos state government as uncharitable.
He said, “It is shameless of the Lagos State government to have attributed the students’ outburst to some imaginary detractors. That is shirking their responsibilities as a government.
Stressing further, CACOL boss berated the government’s claims that the students’ bursary and scholarship awards and research budget have been increased to cushion the effect of the exorbitant school fees.
The human right activist however urged the Lagos State governor to revert the exorbitant tuition fees.
“It is high time Lagos State governor stopped commercializing social services in the state. The astronomical increase from N25,000 to N250,000 tuition fees in LASU and similar increase in other tertiary institutions in the state is making it difficult for children of the masses to be educated. The governor should not forget he was once an indigent student who enjoyed uninterrupted free education to the university level, so he should not burn the bridge he has once used”, Adeniran said.
