Cholera kills 7 in Jigawa

Date:

From Ahmed Abubakar, Dutse

No fewer than seven persons were reportedly dead in Hadejia local government area of Jigawa state, as a result of cholera outbreak, as scores of others are currently receiving urgent medication.

Our correspondent reports that the outbreak of the endemic was sequel to a breakage of water pipeline within Hadejia metropolis, which forced the people living in the community to start fetching the already contaminated water.

The commissioner of health, Dr. Tafida Abubakar confirmed the outbreak, which claimed the lives of some of the community members in Hadejia; however, he did not disclose the actual figure of the casualties but, attributed the case to power outage and assured that government is doing everything possible to assist the community, to avert future re-occurrence.

His words: “Government is aware of the outbreak of gastro enteritis in Hadejia that resulted in killing of some people living in the area, while some others are receiving medical attention in our health institutions”.

It could be recalled that similar endemic reared its ugly head two years ago, in Birnin Kudu local government area of the state, forcing the authorities to quarantine the victims at the Birnin-Kudu General Hospital, apart from the lives that were lost as a result of the outbreak.

Governor Sule Lamido had however visited the victims yesterday and assured them of government’s unrelenting support for them.
