In its determination to preserve the environment, Save the Children International (SCI), Nigeria, on Tuesday took tree planting campaign to Jabi 1Junior Secondary School, Abuja.
The campaign was meant to encourage the students to plant trees and desist from activities that contribute to climate change.
Speaking during the campaign, Faith Osaretin, Health and Nutrition Advocacy Officer, SCI Nigeria, said the climate change action campaign will also sensitize the students on the importance of tree planting.
“We know that children do not engage in the activities that destroy the environment, and they are the most affected. Based of this, we need to encourage them to start preserving the environment.”
She added that SCI will follow up to ensure that the trees are properly taken care of by the school.
She listed some of the trees planted to include mango, guava, orange and many others.
Speaking further, she said SCI will engage other political actors on the need to preserve the environment.
On his part, the Principlal of the School, Sikiru Adeola applauded SCI for the initiative and promised to ensure protection of the trees.
He said the school under his supervision will also assist the children and teach them how to take care of the trees.
He said the economic trees planted in the school will provide the students with fruits and umbrella.
“We do not take this initiative for granted. We will continue to do our part to preserve the environment. I assure you that my students will continue to participate in activities that are aimed at preserving the environment.
Also speaking, a JSS 2 student, David Samuel promised to encourage other students to take care of the trees in the school.
