From Umar Dankano, Yola
Former Anambra state Governor and the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has attributed the current economic challenges facing the country to bad governance and cluelessness of leadership.
Obi opined that, “the cluelessness of those in position of power in the last ten(10) years brought us as a country to the present mess and chaotic situation”
He noted that political leaders must be listeners and be ready to learn the right thing and do them.
Obi who spoke in Yola, Adamawa state at the weekend while delivering his speech as a keynote speaker at the 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary of the American University of Nigeria,AUN, Yola, stressed that, leaders must not act as though they know it all, but should be people-oriented.
He regretted that the economic sector has been badly affected and deformed with the country’s GDP statistics or measurable index in the last ten years (2014).
According to him,the country’s GDP in 2014 was 574 billions dollars with per-capita rate of 3,200 dollars while presently the GDP statistics stands at 220 billions dollars with per-capita at 1000 dollars regrettably.
He stated that the leadership brought only poverty and crisis due to maladministration, advocating that Nigeria will do well with leaders who respect popular views for national development.
“Leaders must be listeners and be ready to learn the right thing and to do it. Leaders must not act as though they know it all,” Obi said.
