An Estate Surveyor Valuer ESV Opeyemi Bello said that Compensation for resettlement in Nigeria is very important.

ESV. Bello made this known in Abuja in during a press briefing.
He said that the aim of compensation in resettlement in Nigeria is to restore and improve the living standards and livelihoods of people affected by development projects, ensuring they are not worse off than before displacement.
He said there are key
objectives to compensation such as Restoration of Livelihoods: Compensation is designed to help displaced persons recover lost income sources and productive assets, particularly for land-based communities .
“Improvement of Living Conditions: Where possible, compensation and resettlement should enhance the quality of life and economic opportunities of affected persons beyond pre-displacement levels .
“Equitable and Transparent Compensation: Payments are to be based on current market values and inclusive of all affected persons, regardless of legal land tenure status .
“Participatory Planning: Affected communities are to be meaningfully consulted and involved in the planning and implementation of resettlement and compensation programs and Legal and Institutional Compliance: Compensation frameworks must align with both Nigerian laws (like the Land Use Act) and international standards (such as World Bank ESS5), with the latter taking precedence in case of conflict”, stated .
He said that compensation in Nigerian resettlement is not just about payment for loss. It is a comprehensive strategy to ensure social justice, economic recovery, and sustainable development for displaced populations.
