Delegates at the national conference yesterday adopted a recommendation by its committee on public service which proposed that pensions, life insurance, and severance payments for legislators be put to a stop, going further to adopt an amendment to expand the recommendation to include state governors.
In addition, the conference agreed that legislators at both the national and state level should operate on a part time basis.
The committee, chaired by Mrs Ebele Okeke received praise from the 140 delegates who weighed in on its report. The committee saw most of its recommendations adopted, including the creation of a separate Foreign Service and Foreign Service commission to be headed by a chairman and made up of six permanent commissioners representing the six geo-political zones, membership of which will include former ambassadors, a person of permanent secretary status as secretary and three or four directorates.
Meanwhile, the Confab on Tuesday adopted a recommendation by its committee on public finance and revenue to put a limit on the amount of money the Government is permitted to borrow.
There was however confusion over a recommendation that borrowing should be by way of bonds only as many delegates were not even clear on the technicalities of the recommendation, with a delegate having to explain to the floor how bonds worked.
The conference also put a stop to the indiscriminate approval of tax waivers by the Government, calling for it to review the available fiscal incentives i.e. granting of waivers and tax exemptions in order to reduce revenue losses.
