Constitutional Review: Stakeholders call for true federalism, state police, women inclusion

Stakeholders at the South West Zonal Centre A have called for true federalism practice, state police, and devolution of power amongst others to shapen Nigeria’s democratic system.

The Stakeholders from Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states made this known during a public hearing on the alteration of the 1999 constitution as organised in Lagos by the South West zonal Centre A of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review.

These stakeholders and governments of the states, while acknowledging the challenges involved in the constitution review process, urged the Committee to consider fairness and fact, not sentiments.

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwoolu, emphasised the need for state policing to ameliorate insecurity faced in different parts of the country.

The South West Conference of Nigeria Speakers, while supporting the demands raised, stressed that the role of traditional rulers should be captured in the constitution of the country

The Nigeria Labour Congress demanded that it should remain in the Exclusive list while other group in their requests called for women inclusion, state creation, and local government autonomy, to mention but a few.

Earlier. the Chairman of the South West Zonal Centre, a committee of the constitution review assured of the committee’s fairness and transparency in delivering its mandate.
