In order to bolster prevention and mitigation of the raging deadly Coronavirus and Lassa Fever in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) especially in schools, thee Rotary Club of Abuja Wuse II has constituted a task force known as the Suzanne C Smith Health Scout Ambassadors, in Government Day Secondary Wuse II, Abuja.
The taskforce team consists of selected students handpicked and trained by health experts for the task of widening the scope of students’ knowledge on avoiding contacting and spreading communicable diseases.
Our correspondent reports that the Health Scout Ambassadors scheme is an initiative put together for training of the trainers in the society.
In particular, the task force were armed with items such as hand sanitizers for their personal use and distribution to other members of the public, after they were certified fit to further train members of each of their classes on personal hygiene and preventive measures to stay safe from communicable diseases.
Also, at the inauguration which took place last week, the Ambassadors were trained by a United Nations (UN) health worker, Dr. Gladys George, who is a medical surgeon.
The UN health worker, charged the ambassadors to be committed to the task handed to them by educating their fellow students about personal hygiene and methods to prevent contacting and spreading of coronavirus and Lassa fever and other communicable diseases.
In a remark, the President of the Rotary Club, Rotarian Pietro Uzochukwu charged the Ambassadors to be watchdogs in their school and report any case of illness to the school authority.
“Having received the requisite training and certified knowledgeable enough about the issues at stake, you are mandated to teach your fellow students on how to avoid contacting and cut the spread of these diseases.
“ Act as watchdogs in your school by reporting any case of illness, exhausted hygiene accessories such as sanitizer, dettol, tissues, hand soap etc which are very fundamental for hygiene for quick replacement,” Uzochukwu the ambassadors.
In a related development, the Rotary Club installed automatic sanitizer dispensing machines in strategic locations in the school.
The Club equally provided hand wash accessories to other students in the school for improved personal hygiene.
