A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ordered the remand of a member of the House of Representatives, Amobi Godwin Ogah, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over allegations of criminal defamation and false declaration.
Justice Yusuf Halilu issued the remand order after the lawmaker was arrested and brought before the court.
According to the court’s warrant of commitment dated June 24, Ogah will remain in custody until July 6, 2026, when proceedings in the matter are expected to resume.
The court document stated that the federal lawmaker is standing trial in Charge No. CR/650/2024 on allegations bordering on criminal defamation and false declaration.
The prosecution alleged that in May 2023, Ogah made false statements in an affidavit filed at the FCT High Court in Abuja against former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha.
One of the allegations claimed that Onyejeocha had told her supporters during a meeting at her residence that she had “bought over” tribunal judges, particularly Justice Halima Saleeman. Prosecutors argued that the statement was false and constituted an offence under the Penal Code.
The lawmaker was also accused of falsely alleging that Onyejeocha influenced the removal of Justice Halilu from an election petition panel to pave the way for Justice Saleeman, whom she allegedly knew personally and who would allegedly deliver judgment in her favour.
Prosecutors further alleged that the statements were deliberately made to damage Onyejeocha’s reputation, causing harm to her public image.
The Federal Government had, on July 31, 2024, filed a five-count criminal charge against the Abia lawmaker, accusing him of making false and defamatory declarations contrary to the provisions of the Penal Code.
With the remand order now in effect, Ogah is expected to remain in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the continuation of his trial on July 6.
