Court sentences teen bride to death for husband’s murder

Date:

A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 19-year-old housewife, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging for the murder of her husband, Salisu Idris, barely nine days after their wedding.

The court found Jibrin, a resident of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, guilty of culpable homicide after holding that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Maryam Sabo ruled that the evidence before the court established the defendant’s guilt.

“I hereby sentence Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging for culpable homicide. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge declared.

The prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano.

He said the convict allegedly laced her husband’s Zoho drink before slashing his throat with a knife at about 9 p.m., just nine days after the couple got married.

According to the prosecution, two witnesses testified during the trial and their evidence supported the charge against the defendant.

Jibrin, however, denied committing the offence throughout the proceedings.

The prosecution argued that the offence contravened Section 221(a) of the Penal Code.

In his plea for mercy, defence counsel, Abdulfatah Muhammad, urged the court to temper justice with compassion.

He told the court that his client had become a changed person while in custody and had memorised the Holy Qur’an.

Muhammad also appealed to the court to consider that the convict is the first child of her parents and that her younger siblings depend on her for support.

Despite the plea, the court sentenced Jibrin to death by hanging and granted her 90 days within which to appeal the judgment.
