The Chairman, Daily Trust Foundation, Alhaji Bilya Bala has tasked journalists in the country on the need to acquire new digital skills.
Speaking at a 3-day workshop on multimedia journalism, held at the training centre of Daily Trust Foundation, the chairman said digital facilities and the Internet have pulled down the walls that separated the various media, leading to what is now fashionably called multimedia newsroom.
He said “digitization has helped journalist to use; Skype, Zoom, Google Meet and Whatsapp, etc to conduct interviews with sources for his/her stories.Use his handheld devices – phones and tablets – for audio-visual recording and take photographs on his phone. It has also helped journalist to use his story on social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, etc.”
He added that livestream events on Facebook or YouTube do a lot more activities made possible through the growing opportunities in the digital world. “Journalists who do not have relevant skills or who cannot cope with multiple demands are being phased out of Journalism.”
Represented by Malam Umar Abdullahi, Board member Daily Trust Foundation, he said the workshop was meant to build the capacity of journalists to use various tools and applications.
“We encourage you to pay attention, learn as much as possible and, most importantly, put what you will learn to practice. New skills are difficult to acquire. But we have discovered that digital platforms have in-built tutorials. If you labour and work hard at it, in no time you will be very skillful and relevant in your chosen profession. “
