DataPro Limited has secured approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of The Gambia to provide credit rating services in the country, marking an expansion of its regional operations.
The approval will enable the company to introduce its credit assessment expertise to The Gambia’s financial market, where access to reliable credit information is increasingly important for financing decisions and the development of capital markets.
Credit ratings provide independent assessments of the ability of businesses and financial institutions to meet their financial obligations, helping lenders and investors evaluate creditworthiness and make informed decisions.
DataPro said the services could support licensed commercial banks in assessing credit exposures and assist businesses, including Gambian-owned telecommunications companies, in communicating their credit profiles to prospective lenders and investors.
The company noted that independent credit ratings could complement existing financial information and internal risk assessments, although they do not guarantee access to funding or eliminate credit risks.
As The Gambia’s capital market develops, the adoption of credit ratings is expected to depend on the needs of issuers, investor expectations and the extent to which financial institutions integrate independent assessments into their lending and investment decisions.
As part of its expansion, DataPro also plans to publish its Gambia Banking Risk Outlook 2027 in the first quarter of 2027. The report will examine key developments and risks in the country’s banking sector, including asset quality, capital adequacy, liquidity and profitability.
According to the company, these indicators provide insights into the resilience of financial institutions, while broader macroeconomic conditions can influence borrowers’ repayment capacity and the quality of banks’ assets.
DataPro’s entry into The Gambia comes amid efforts to strengthen financial market infrastructure and improve the availability of information for assessing credit risks. Its credit rating services are expected to provide market participants with an additional framework for evaluating businesses and financial institutions.
The company said the long-term value of the services would depend on how effectively credit ratings support lending decisions, improve risk assessment and help investors better understand the financial standing of the entities in which they seek to invest.
