Delta Assembly audits SUBEB staff list, ongoing, completed projects

The Delta State House of Assembly has commenced investigation into the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Staff list, including the ongoing and completed projects.

The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Angela Nwaka, who made this known to journalists yesterday, said the measures to ascertain the names of all teaching and non teaching staff, as well as their subject areas in all public primary schools in each Local Government Areas across the state became necessary following the alleged bloated staffs of the board.

She said that the House Committee on Education would embark on several unannounced oversight visits to SUBEB as part of efforts to strengthen primary education in the state.

The lawmaker noted that the committee was committed to moving education forward in the state, stressing that SUBEB being the supervisory body on primary education which had been the foundation needed to be up and doing in order to enhance the quality of education.

Expectedly, there have been several petitions from the public to the committee alleging bloated staff list and inflation of central roads including abandoned projects by SUBEB.

But the Angela Nwaka in a swift reaction, however promised to work closely with SUBEB, and sued for robust relationship between the committee and SUBEB, adding that the present administration had placed high premium on education as encapsulated in the Okowa led SMART Agenda.

Earlier, the state chairman of SUBEB, Sunny Ogwu, had told journalists in Asaba that the Board was committed to high standard, adding that modalities had been put in place to improve on monitoring and supervision of teachers and schools.

He said the state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, through the board, had enhanced the quality of education at the primary level, noting that Delta State had been ranked among the best in Basic education in the country,

Sources had alleged staff increase by the Board, but the board chairman, Sunny Ogwu, in a swift reaction, dispelled as untrue, insisting the Assembly reports would vindicate the board when completed.
