Piqued by the continued attacks and alleged killings of persons, residents of Issele Azagba Community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State have fled their homes to neighbouring Communities and Benin City in Edo State for what they described as” flee for safety”
Aggrieved and disillusioned residents of the Community had on Wednesday in the early hours protested in various Streets of the Community demanding the arrest of the Suspected Fulani herdsmen who they described as torn in their flesh, especially in their alleged killings of their people, and raping of their wives in their farmlands
Leader of the protesters, Comrade Edozie Ogegbu who spoke to Journalists in the area said that their protest was informed by the abduction of one Mrs Helen Benwari on Sunday night at Abuelo quarters after her husband, Daniel Benwari was shot dead by her abductors who also inflicted injuries on her daughter, adding that the situation was becoming too precarious and dangerous for them as residents and Indigenes hence they sought to live elsewhere outside the Community.
He said” nobody is safe at the moment in the Community, and our farmers had refused to go to farm for fear of the unknown, and the existing Vigilante group has been overpowered by the Sophisticated weapons the hoodlums are using, the Police are not doing enough for us and we Cannot sleep with our two eyes closed and allow these hoodlums to finish our lives in our houses”
Meanwhile, the wife of the slain Daniel Benwari has been released by her abductors after ransome was allegedly paid while she was taken to Federal Medical Center ( FMC, Asaba) for treatment.
Speaking on her sick bed, Mrs Benwari said” my abductors were speaking Hausa language and they threatened to Kill me after I refused their attempt to rape me and I was crying that they have killed my husband and they want to rape me, I shouted for help, there was no help and they started flogging me like a Child and I was crying like a baby before their boss asked them to kick me out of the bush and I was thrown away”
But the Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Muhammed Inuwah said that the police were doing enough to ensure the safety of the people, adding that over twenty persons Suspected to be Fulani hersdmen have been arrested and detained at the state CID for further investigation and warned that the Police will not entertain any act of lawlessness being displayed by some of the Issele Azagba Community Indigenes, especially at the difficult times to bring the hoodlums to arrest.
