A renowned Kano business mogul,  Aminu Dantata has said that democracy has failed in Nigeria, in view of how the country is always going backwards in every strata of development.

Dantata spoke on Wednesday at his residence, located at  Koki quarters in Kano metropolis, when the Northern Elders Forum, NEF,  led by Professor Ango Abdullahi paid him a condolence visit over the death of Bashir Othman Tofa.

According to Dantata, Nigeria is passing through trying times, occasioned by bad management of democratic system of government, noting that the only way forward to effective governance is parliamentary system.

The nonagenarian noted that “presidential system is too cumbersome, too expensive to be sustained”, pointing out that it was the expensive nature of the system that had given way to a myriad of problems bedeviling the country.

According to him, Nigeria is passing a critical stage of democratic transition where the presidential system of government needs to be discarded in favor of the parliamentary one.

He said Nigeria had suffered a lot in the hands of colonial masters who had exploited the nation for years, lamenting that it was the wealth of the nation they plundered in order to boost their own economic fortune.

He noted that there is a compelling need for urgent rethink for the country to answer its name in all spares of human interest, stressing that the nation is currently losing the focus and stem as a result of absence of focused and credible leadership.

 Dantata therefore called on policy makers in the country to effect a paradigm shift through the abolishing of the present constitution for credible leadership to prevail.

He also called on elders I’m the country, irrespective of region and religion, to team up and salvage the country from its current problems.

 The business mogul said the prevailing constitution in the country should be streamline in accordance with present realities for business leadership to be on the right track.

In his address earlier, Chairman of the NEF, MrAbdullahi, stated that they are in Kano to condole the peopl and government of the state over the demise of Mr Tofa, Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmad, Sani Dangote and Ado Gwaram, former secretary to Kano state government .

Those on the entourage included General Saleh Maina, Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Waziri Bauchi, Alhaji Bello Kirfi, Nastura Shariff, Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed, among others.

The Northern Elders Forum also visited the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, Deputy Governor  Mr Nasiru Gawuna, Alhaji Yahaya Hamma and Aminu Dantata homes.
