Director urges councils to embrace adult literacy programme

Date:

Alhaji Musa Yakubu, Director, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Agency for Mass Education, has called on the area councils of the Territory, to embrace literacy programmes at the grassroots to achieve the goal two of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Yakubu, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said it became imperative for them to encourage their subjects to embrace literacy programme as most of the FCT grass roots populace could not read and write.

NAN reports that goal two is achieving universal primary education with the deadline in 2015.
He said the agency, with 582 centres in the six councils, had the mandate to provide literacy to those who did not have the opportunity to access formal education in their early life.
“Most of these centres are in the six area councils; it will be good if the chairmen will encourage their people to embrace the non formal education or mass literacy.
“It is our mandate to make sure that every adult is literate, including youths that are out of schools; our time table is not rigid for them to be discouraged.

“We want everybody to be educated because we want to achieve the MDGs goal 2015 deadline,’’ he said.
However, he said that the mandates did not go beyond training and giving basic education to adults and the youth that were far above the primary school age.
“These are the categories we can train, but for those who are out of schools and they are within primary school age, they are being handled by the Universal Basic Education (UBE),’’ he said. (NAN)
