Former Nigerian goalkeeper Joseph Dosu has said the Super Eagles’ safest hands, Vincent Enyeama, stands a 90% chance of being crowned the 2014 Glo/Caf African best player of the year.
The Lille of France shot stopper is hotly challenged for the coveted award that will be held in Lagos on Thursday by the title holder Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast and Gabonese international Pierre Emerrick-Aubameyang.
Dosu said the former Enyimba goaltender has performed excellently in the year under review and deserved to be crowned the best player in Africa.
“Enyeama’s performances speak volumes. He should win the award.
“Recently he was honoured as the best goalkeeper in France while Goal.com named him Nigeria’s best player.
“Enyeama narrowly missed the BBC Best Player Award simply because Nigerians didn’t spare the energy and time to vote for him.
“For the 2014 Glo/Caf African player of the year he has a 90% chance to win the coveted award.
“Enyeama has done well for club and country in the year under review and if he goes ahead to win I’ll be the happiest man on mother earth.
“We know how difficult it has been in the past for goalkeepers to win the award. Even now the odds are still against goalkeepers winning the award.
“If the award is strictly based on excellent performance and not on whether the player is an attacker, defender, goalkeeper or midfielder I strongly believe that Enyeama a very good chance of winning the award.
“I look forward to seeing Enyeama break the age-long jinx that has made goalkeepers outsiders for the prime award,” said the hero of Atlanta’96 Olympics to supersport.com.
Yaya Toure defeated Nigeria’s Mikel Obi in the immediate past edition of the yearly award in Lagos, Nigeria.
