The proponent of the National Commission for the Co-ordination and Control of Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) Bill, Dr Baba Mohammed, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its strides in curbing crime and criminality across the country.
Dr Mohammed, who is also the Madaki of Ankpa, made the remarks in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
He urged Nigerians to be wary of fraudsters, stressing that the suspension he personally imposed on NATCOM operations remains in effect until the bill receives presidential assent.
While expressing gratitude to officers and men of the proposed commission for their patience, he called on all stakeholders to remain law-abiding as they await the formal approval of the bill.
“As a law-abiding organisation, NATCOM will continue to await further action by Mr President towards the realisation of the commission, which aligns with the ECOWAS Convention to which Nigeria is a signatory,” he said.
Dr Mohammed also warned against impersonation, stating that anyone found falsely representing NATCOM before its official commencement would face the full weight of the law.
He went on to laud the administration’s achievements, extending special appreciation to President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
Others he acknowledged include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the heads of the nation’s security agencies.
