Drug abuse kills 200,000 every year- Ahmadu Giade

The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade has revealed that a global estimation of 200,000 people lose their lives to drug abuse every year.

Giade disclosed this at the 2013/2014 world Drug and International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), report, which took place at the NAFDAC head quarters yesterday.

He further explained that, drug abuse is not only harmful to its indulger, but has been linked to most heinous crimes, committed against humanity in the society, adding that most of the preventable deaths recorded were for youths.

Giade also disclosed that the agency is rising against the looming threat posed by illicit drugs, by drawing up plans to totally dismantle drug trafficking syndicates in the country, adding that 6 methamphetamine production laboratories have been shot down in the country.

In welcome address, the Director General, National Agency for Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC), Dr Paul Orhii, commended the efforts of the International Organisation, in the effective control of narcotics and psychotropic substances in many countries; while making sure that provision of such substances were only used for medical and scientific purposes.
