Durex donates 100,000 condoms to NACA

Date:

Durex, makers of Durex Condom has donated 100,000 condoms to the National Action for the Control of AIDS (NACA), to mark the International Condom Day.
Durex Marketing Director, West Africa R.B. Aliza Leferink, who made the donation said “we want people to be safe during sex because protection is key. We want people to use proper condom and help in red icing the virus.”
She added that successes have been achieved with the drop in HIV/AIDS from 5% to 3%.
Also speaking, UNAIDS Adviser on Global Funds/PEPFAR Implementation, Dr. Richard Amenyah said more than 70% of the investment into HIV are coming from international sources. “In fact, US Government and Global Fund are paying for 96% of the drugs for the over 1 million people on treatment. This cannot continue and needs to be reversed.
“We cannot treat our way out of this epidemic like that. We need to invest more in to prevention. Every day, globally, more than one million people acquire a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and every year, they are estimated to be around 80 million unintended pregnancies. Condoms prevent intended pregnancies when used correctly and consistently.
“With 1.8 million new infections in 2016, we have about 5,000 new infections per day and Nigeria contributed about 700 new HIV infections per day. Nigeria accounted for 60% of all new HIV infections in West and central Africa region in 2016. In our part of the world, (sub-Saharan Africa), more than 98% of new HIV infections are sexually transmitted.”
