Eagles AFCON ouster: Kalu, Atiku, Call for improvement, World Cup play-off focus

Prominent Nigeria leaders have continued to express their feelings over the ouster of the Super Eagles from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cameroon.

Former governor of Abia State and a former Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have respectively called for improvement of the team and a change in direction and focus in the 2022 Qatar World Cup play-off against Ghana. 

Reacting after the Augustine Eguavoen-led lads were eliminated from the tournament after a 1-0 loss to Tunisia on Sunday, Africa’s Pillar of Sports, Senator Kalu said the evening was a sad one for all football lovers in Nigeria but called for improvement of the team going forward.

“It is a sad evening for all of us soccer lovers ; very sad we lost .  

“An improvement on the team is the only way forward.

He congratulated the team for their efforts and hoped for a better outing next time. “I congratulate the players for their efforts as we look forward to better outings in the future.”

On his part, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President of the country and Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 general elections, said Nigeria must not give up.

He appreciated the players for their stride so far and called for a focus on the 2022 World Cup qualifier.

“We must never give up. I appreciate our players and the entire Team Nigeria for the successes so far. 

“We may have lost out of the AFCON2021 at this point, but our sights should be trailed on the Qatar World Cup qualifying game against Ghana #WeKeepMoving,” he said 

Nigeria will play Ghana in the 2022 World Cup play-off in March.
