Ebola: South African lady quarantined in Lagos

South African national has been placed under quarantine, in Lagos, while series of tests are being carried out to ascertain whether she had contracted the Ebola virus disease.

According to a press statement issued by the office of the Minister of Health yesterday, signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Minister of Health, Dan Nwomeh, the suspected South African woman was reported to have presented with symptoms similar to that of the Ebola disease after flying into Lagos.

Considering her point of departure, she had also admitted to having diarrhea and vomiting, when filling a questionnaire, which she was given at the airport.

The woman had been in Guinea and Sierra Leon for 6 months and had fallen ill; she is being treated as a suspected case, pending when the test results will be out.

Director of Port Health Services at Lagos airport, Dr. Morenike Alex-Okoh, had also confirmed this in an interview with Reuters, saying, “This person has been in Guinea and Sierra Leone since April … she has symptoms.”

The Health minister has however confirmed that the woman was quarantined at the isolation ward in Lagos while her case is being investigated.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu yesterday said the university student at the Ile-Ife, who had close contact with the late Port Harcourt Doctor at a naming ceremony, had developed symptoms has turned out negative after investigation.

The Minister had reported the case on Wednesday, while also revealing that there was no more confirmed case of Ebola except for those, who are still under surveillance in Lagos and Port Harcourt.

Chukwu also revealed that the late Port Harcourt doctor’s wife, who had contracted the disease, along with his sister have fully recovered and discharged from the isolation centers, while Lagos has only 16 contacts under surveillance and Rivers now has 490 contacts, haven discharged about 16 secondary contacts of the index case of Ebola in Nigeria, as they have completed the 21 days incubation period.
