Nigeria and Mexico held a first consultative meeting focusing on mutual interest with discussions covering a wide range of strategic areas like Economic and Trade Relations, Political Dialogue, Legal instruments and Consular Cooperation, Regional, Multilateral Affairs.
The meeting held in Abuja Wednesday was co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Foreign Ministry, Amb. Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD and Director-General for Africa, Central Asia and Middle-East of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Amb Anibal Gomez Toledo, who led the Mexican delegation, reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties, enhancing economic opportunities, and advancing multilateral cooperation and affairs.
However, the issues discussed at the meeting included Political Dialogue which touched on outlook for high-level visits and structured dialogue mechanisms, alongside preparations for the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria–Mexico diplomatic relations.
In the area of Economic and Trade Relations, promotion of the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expansion of business exchanges, and exploration of new trade and investment opportunities were deliberated upon.
The issues of Legal instruments and Consular Cooperation were also brought up majoring on review of existing legal instruments under negotiation, identification of new areas for cooperation, and enhancement of consular collaboration between both countries.
Multilateral Affairs as it concerns Joint engagement on pending candidacies, participation in the G-20 Summit, and shared support for reforms of the United Nations system were also discussed.
The meeting also looked into an update on the regional situation in ECOWAS and areas of mutual concern.
However, Amb. Ahmed conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation to his guest, Amb. Gómez Toledo and members of the delegation for their commitment in strengthening the long-standing relations between both nations, reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness to advance cooperation for mutual benefit.
The next session of the consultative meeting was scheduled to hold in Mexican.
