Edo: Oko Prisons skill acquisition centre for upgrade

The skill acquisition center in Oko medium prisons is set to get a face-lift by Edo state government.
In addition, inmates in the prisons are to benefit from the empowerment programme of the state governor’s wife, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki.
Wife of the Edo Governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki disclosed this during the celebration of the 58th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria with the inmates.
Mrs. Obaseki charged the inmates to embrace skills acquisition to become eligible to access soft loans to set up businesses when they complete their jail terms.
“I will partner with the management and staff of prisons to develop a new skills acquisition curriculum so as to carry every one”, she said.
Responding, the Controller of Prisons, Mr. Joseph Usendiah, said the controller general of prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, had embarked on a long term sustainable growth plan for the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS).
In a remark, the first Controller of Prisons, Mr. Lily Ojo (CGP rtd), tasked philanthropists to extend hands of fellowship to the inmates, adding that prisoners.
One of the inmates, Pastor Stanley Okofu on behalf of his colleagues, said at least 86 discharged inmates of the prison has successfully gone through the All Nations for Christ Bible Institute.
He explained father that 19 inmates recently enrolled and passed WAEC and NECO examinations while nine other inmates who had graduated from tertiary education.
He emphasized that freedom is not the ability to do whatever you like but, doing what is right.
“One cannot be truly free or sustain freedom without good character.” he said.
The Inmate General Provost of Oko prisons, Charles Omawumi, who spoke at the occasion described the prison as “a structure to restructure the future of the criminal minds. “
