Egypt etched their name into football history on Monday after defeating New Zealand 3-1 to record their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory and seal qualification for the Round of 32 at the 2026 tournament.
The historic triumph in Vancouver ended a 92-year wait for a World Cup win and sent the Pharaohs to the top of Group G with four points.
New Zealand had threatened to spoil the party after taking an early lead in the first half, putting Egypt under immense pressure. But the seven-time African champions returned from the break with renewed determination and completely turned the game around.
Goals from Zizo, captain Mohamed Salah and Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” inspired a remarkable comeback and handed Egypt one of the most memorable victories in the country’s football history.
The win was also significant as it marked the first time Egypt have scored three goals in a single World Cup match.
Before Monday’s encounter, the Pharaohs had gone winless in four previous World Cup appearances dating back to their tournament debut in 1934.
They had come close to ending the drought in their opening Group G match against Belgium, only to be denied victory by a late own goal in a 1-1 draw.
With four points from two matches, Egypt have now mathematically secured their place in the knockout stage under the expanded 48-team World Cup format.
The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among Egyptian players and fans both in Vancouver and back home in Cairo as the Pharaohs reached the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time ever.
Egypt will face Iran in their final Group G match on Saturday, aiming to secure top spot in the group and continue their dream run at the tournament.
