The number of registered voters in Ekiti State has increased by more than 71,000 ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC disclosed that the state’s voter register grew from 987,647 registered voters in 2023 to 1,059,360 in 2026 following a clean-up exercise of the register.
The commission also announced that 1,028,929 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) had been collected by eligible voters, representing a collection rate of 97.1 per cent, slightly higher than the 97.0 per cent recorded during the last election cycle.
The figures were contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, as the commission officially concluded PVC distribution ahead of the June 20 governorship poll.
According to the electoral body, thousands of voters also applied for replacement cards in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
“With regards to Section 18(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires the Commission to make available to registered voters replacement PVCs in the event of loss, damage or defacement, 14,406 applications were received within the stipulated time, and all 14,406 replacement PVCs were printed, most of which have been collected,” Haruna stated.
INEC, however, explained that plans to provide downloadable copies of replacement voter cards could not be implemented for the Ekiti election because of technological infrastructure limitations.
The commission said the innovation is expected to debut during the Osun governorship election in August and subsequently during the 2027 general election.
Haruna commended traditional institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, political parties and media practitioners for supporting voter mobilization efforts across the state.
INEC further assured residents that all eligible applicants, including those who transferred their voter registration or sought replacement cards, had their PVCs printed and made available before the election.
The commission urged voters to participate peacefully in Saturday’s poll, reiterating its commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible and inclusive governorship election.
