From Ado Abubakar Musa, Jos
A chieftain of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), and former, Ambassador to Switzerland Ambassador Yahaya Kwande, has commended the courage displayed by the outgoing governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, following his defeat by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded Ekiti Governorship election.
The Ambassador who made the commendation while briefing newsmen in Jos yesterday said Fayemi’s acceptance of the defeat was a clear indication that upped the ante of politics in the country calling on other politicians to copy from Fayemi.
While commending the outgoing governor, Kwande also lamented the huge resources spent on the Ekiti election, describing it as ” the most expensive election in the Nigerian history.” He further expressed unhappiness at the way the PDP used every possible means to influence the outcome of the poll.
The former ambassador however commended the way the poll was conducted peacefully, adding that it was also a good development in the country’s politics.
He said, “a good development has been set in Ekiti election because the atmosphere was good even though the government in the center has used its power of incumbency to manipulate the process.”
Kwande however said that the outcome of the Ekiti poll should not be a determing factor that PDP would win the upcoming general election. “It would not be allowed to influence elections come 2015”, he said
“Our party cannot afford such approach. It was not a good example for what would happen in the general election, although the expenditure, security and the atmosphere is quite different I appeal to Nigerians not to be intimidated by this current trend,” he added.
