Emerging mental health researcher named one of the next generation experts shaping youth health worldwide

Dr. Omolayo Joy Anjorin has been named one of the most promising mental health researchers of her generation. With a career that spans four continents and a focus on youth-centered, equity-driven solutions, Dr. Anjorin is building a body of work that is already influencing policy, service delivery, and global conversations about behavioral health in low-resource and underserved settings.

Born and trained initially as a physician in Nigeria, Dr. Anjorin’s early experiences in clinical medicine revealed the harsh realities of stigma, poverty, and systemic neglect in mental health care. Her volunteer work with displaced communities during the Donbas War in Ukraine opened her eyes to the lasting mental scars of conflict and migration.
These formative experiences inspired a deep commitment to addressing mental health through a lens of structural equity, community participation, and global relevance.

Her passion for advancing mental health led her to pursue graduate education in Europe. At Maastricht University, she received the High Holland Potential Scholarship to study Global Health, where her thesis explored the social construction of racial identity among medical students. She then received the Johnson & Johnson Global Mental Health Scholarship to complete a joint degree at King’s College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr. Anjorin is now completing her PhD in Public Health at George Mason University, where she was awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholarship. Her doctoral research focuses on substance use and mental health among youth populations, with a strong emphasis on prevention, behavioral modeling, and culturally responsive care. She is a lead researcher on two youth tobacco prevention projects supported by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and contributes to international efforts on mental health access and commercial influences on health through networks such as GCAN.

Her publications, which appear in journals such as Trends in Higher Education, Annals of Medicine and Surgery, and The Journal of Climate Change and Health, reflect a multidisciplinary approach to health equity and systems change. Her work is not only academically rigorous but also actionable, with direct implications for youth health programs in the United States, West Africa, and beyond.

In addition to research, Dr. Anjorin is a skilled educator and mentor. She has taught public health and mental health courses across the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and the United States. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes curiosity, critical thinking, and student empowerment.
